United KingdomThe "Seven Sisters" are chalk cliffs along the coast between Eastbourne and Seaford. With 162m Beachy Head is the highest among the seven and also the highest chalk cliff in whole Great Britain. Beneath Beachy Head is a red lighthouse which has become a famous landmark due to its location and importance for ships passing the Channel.
On the top of the cliffs is also a visitor centre and in summer a few restaurants and ice creams shop open. After the last hill is a little town called Birling Gap. There it is possible to go down to the shore and see with one's own eyes how the chalk cliffs are exposed to erosion and the strength of nature and climate change.
How to get there:
From Eastbourne take the 12, 12A or 13 bus from Eastbourne bus station to the Country Park (13 runs only only Sundays and public holidays!). Line 13 goes along the Beachy Head road closer to the cliffs (get off at the stop Beachy Head). Lines 12 and 12A don't take the Beachy Head road so you have to walk from the stops either Southdowns Way (~45min.) or from East Dean via Birling Gap (~1:15h). The complete tour from East Dean via Birling Gap to the bus stop Southdowns Way takes ~2 hours. Walking all the way back over the cliffs from East Dean via Birling Gap to Eastbourne is 3-4h.
Travel time from Eastbourne by bus is approx. 10-15 minutes. If you want to, you can continue the trip with Line 12 until Brighton or vice versa (total route: 1h).
