Hotel Orquidea Funchal

*** star hotel with which we were very pleased. Very good location for people who want to do something. Being close to the city center you can reach the departure points of all four bus operators running on Madeira within walking distance. The hotel's restaurant is located on the 6th floor. From there you have a good view. There is also a roof terrace. For Portuguese standards: very good breakfast menu :-) Only the coffee is made from instant powder. But you can also get "real" coffee, for which you then have to pay extra. Should we come back one day to Madeira, we will stay here again.

Youth Hostel Funchal

Pousada de Juventude Funchal

There should be four hostels on the island, as well as another hostel on the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Three of the hostels in Madeira, I have even seen (December, 2015). The hostel in Funchal is not right in the city center, but you can reach on foot still quite good. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Both the inside and the outside of the hostel looked attractive and clean. Everything seemed inviting. The rooms themselves, I can not comment. But according to the price list hanging out, there must be rooms for 1 or 2-person inlc shower/WC. The price I remember was about 35 EUR per night/room.

Youth Hostel Porto Moniz

Pousada de Juventude Porto Moniz

The youth hostel in Porto Moniz is located in the historic center, not far from the church. Easy access to the hiking trails on foot. The sea pool is still within walking distance. The hostel looks rather small, with a tiny dining room (I think there were four tables, each for 4 persons). The entrance of the hostel looked attractive and clean. Everything seemed inviting. The rooms themselves, I can not comment, but according to the price list hanging out there must also be rooms for 1 or 2-persons providing shower/WC. The price I remember was around 35 EUR per night/room.

Youth Hostel Santana

Pousada de Juventude Santana

Thos who visit Madeira, will also make a trip to Santana. This is possible as a day trip. But if you want to go hiking, you need more time, and thus a night outside off Funchal. The hostel in Santana is located not far from the historic center and very close to the large supermarket (Continente). The building of the hostel looks very modern. From inside we could unfortunately not take a closer look, because at the time of our visit (Sunday afternoon) it was closed. However, everything seemed appealing, neat and clean. The hostel looked inviting to me.
