PortugalExcursion to Porto Moniz with a visit to the rock swimming pool
Porto Moniz, com uma visita à piscina rocha
Once on Madeira and then perhaps also in Funchal, it makes sense to take a trip to Porto Moniz. The bus company Rodoeste offers a convenient connection. Daily one can at 09:00 h, take line 139 (the tour goes counter-clockwise). Monday to Friday you may also use at 10:00 h with the line 80 (the tour goes clockwise). We chose the tour at 09:00 h and that's also a good idea in my view. The route leads over Camara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava (here a 10 minute break). Then via the Encumeada pass and then to Sao Vicente (there is also a 10 minute break) and Seixal. Arrival in Porto Moniz is about 12:00 h. Here you have a four-hour stay and the time for a visit to the sea water swimming pool (rocky bathing pools) and/or to visit a restaurant. The entrance to the bathroom costs EUR 1.50 per person. The water temperature was at the time of our visit (December) at 17 ° C. If you come only for day trip: Daily you have the possibility to return tour with the line 80 at 16:00 h. The route then leads to Ponta do Pargo and Calheta (again a 10 minute break), further on Ponta do Sol to Ribeira Brava (another 10-minute break). From here the route is known ... via Camara de Lobos back to Funchal, where the bus arrives around 20:00 h (depending on traffic). Alternatively, the return is possible from Monday to Friday by line 139. Deparutre at 16:45 h, arriving at 18:45 h in Funchal. The route will probably not be over the Encumeada, but through the tunnel. Route is via Seixal, Sao Vicente, then through the tunnel to Ribeira Brava, and then via the express way Via Rapida. In this round there is only a 10-minute rest (in Ribeira Brava).
Trip to Miradouro Cabo Girao
Miradouro Cabo Girão
An excursion to the Cabo Girão. The Cabo Girão is a cliff in southern Madeira near the village of Câmara de Lobos. "We have created here an ultra modern styled lookout" (as my pocket guide calls it). Through the glass floor you can look 580 meters in depth. The bus company Rodoeste offers a convenient connection. The journey takes 50 minutes. The price for a route is only 2.75 EUR (as of December 2015). Departures from Funchal to Cabo Girao: Monday to Friday, 09:30 h (line 7) Monday to Saturdays, 11:00 h (line 7) Departures from Cabo Girao back to Funchal: Monday to Friday, 10:40 h (line 7) Monday to Saturday, 13:00 h (line 7) Monday to Saturday, 14:50 h (Monday to Friday with the line 4 or Saturday with the line 148) My opinion: Yes, when the weather is nice you can enjoy a beautiful view of Funchal. Nevertheless, I personally enjoyed more the trip to Ponta do Garajau (is only 200 m high). There are a lot of tourists here and prices for coffee expensive (EUR 4.50). Better to get one in the village, it's cheaper. We paid just under 2 EUR for two small coffee (bica) plus a biscuit.
Trip to Ponta do Garajau
Ponta do Garajau
Once on Madeira and possibly even in Funchal, I recommend a trip to Ponta Garajau in Canico. From Funchal, you will reach the place with the bus line 155 of the Company EACL (Empresa de Automoveis do Canico). There is a 18 m high statue of Christ on the headland. And from the terrace you have a good view to Funchal in the west or to Canico de Baixo to the east. A café is also available. In addition, well-maintained toilets (outside the cafes).
Parque Santa Catarina
Beautiful park with spectacular views of the harbor.
Public park
Jardim Municipal
Nice, little park with a coffee.
Trip to Santana with visit to the Casas de Colmo
Santana com visita ao Casas de Colmo
From Funchal you have the option to visit Santana (in the northeast of the island) if you are focused on public transportation. Santana is served by the bus company Companhia dos Carros de São Gonçalo SA. Daily connection from Funchal to Santana at 07:30h (bus 103). Additional on Monday to Saturday at 10:00 h and Sunday at 10:30 h (bus 56). Back then (except Saturday), for example, at 15:30 h (line 56). Saturdays already at 13:15 h or at 17:30 h (with the line 103). The journey takes about 1.5 hours. Although the distance is not very big, but the mountainous terrain and the stop in every small village calls for its time. The trip itself is interesting. In Santana the "Casas de Colmo", so the thatched cottages, are recommended to visit. Yes, they are very nice to look at, but I think it is overrated as a tourist attraction. However, our trip to Santana was overall pleasant. We have discovered there is a nice little restaurant where we spent the lunch time and felt very comfortable (followed by a separate post).
