Interrail in Belgium
How to travel by Interrail in Belgium. Overview and information to travel routes, Belgian train types, night trains and Interrail reservations.
Validity:
Interrail is valid on all trains of SNCB/NMBS (State Railways), Thalys and Eurostar as well as on the IC Buses of DB.

Reservation and supplement:
Day trains: All trains operated by SNCB/NMBS can be used without seat reservations including international services to the neighbouring countries. Compulsory reservation on Eurostar services from Brussels to London and Paris, Thalys services from Brussels to Cologne, Amsterdam and Paris as well as on IC Buses operated by DB.
Supplement payable („Diabolo“) for trips to Brussels Airport.

Night trains: There are no night trains in Belgium.
Good to know:
Travelling with Interrail is very simple in Belgium. All domestic trains are operated by State Railways SNCB/NMBS. The railway network is said to be densest in the world and there are usually at least two fast connections between major cities (Brussels, Gent, Antwerp, Liege). For domestic services, no seat reservations are possible, just hop on and get a seat. There are just a few scenic lines, especially in the Ardennes (routes to Luxembourg).

There are no private railways in Belgium, however international high speed trains Thalys and Eurostar require quite expensive seat reservations. More informations about these trains and how to avoid them can be found in the blog.
Keep in mind that Belgium is a bilingual country (actually, German is the third official language but in use only in a small area close to the border to Germany) so you will find information screens, timetables etc in either French or Dutch (or both) languages. This is especially important if you are looking for city names on departure boards: Gent = Gand, Antwerp = Anvers etc...
Currently there is only one ferry route operating from Belgium, this is the Zeebrugge to Hull (Great Britian) ferry.
