Interrail in Croatia
How to travel by Interrail in Croatia. Overview and information to travel routes, Croatian train types, night trains and Interrail reservations.
Validity:
Interrail is valid on all trains of HZPP (State Railways) and on IC Buses operated by DB from Osijek and Zagreb to Munich.

Reservation and supplement:
Day trains: Reservation is compulsory for the ICN trains from Zagreb to Split and the IC train from Zagreb to Osijek as well as for IC Buses to Germany. All other trains can be used without a reservation.

Night trains: Seat reservation is compulsory on the night trains from Zagreb to Zurich and Munich as well as for the Budapest – Split night train. No reservation required on the night trains from Zagreb to Split and Belgrade.

Good to know:
Zagreb is the central hub of the Croatian railway network. Here the main lines to Rijeka, Split, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Osijek, Budapest, Vienna and Ljubljana start. Along the Adriatic coast the network is not very dense, the only stations directly at the coast are Rijeka, Sibenik and Split. Zadar is currently served by replacement buses only.
Even on main lines trains are not that frequent, for instance there are only two daytime trains from Zagreb to Split. Besides the line to Pula this is also the most scenic line in the country.

The railway line across Istria starts in the north in Divaca in Slovenia and runs to the south to end in Pula. Lupoglav is an intermediate stop on this line and the bus connects Lupoglav on the Istrian line with Rijeka and the rest of the Croatian rail network. The bus is operated by HZPP and is included in Interrail.
Since the railway network is not that dense you have to use the bus to reach a number of tourist destinations. Typical examples would be Plitvice Lakes and Dubrovnik, both are only served by regular buses. These buses are not included in Interrail, you need to buy separate tickets. Schedules and tickets are available locally, there are frequent services on all important routes. In general, if you are travelling south of Split (for instance when heading to Dubrovnik) and want to continue towards Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Serbia, the bus is the best choice too. From Split and Dubrovnik international services to the neighbouring countries run several times each day.
International ferries run from Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik to Ancona and Bari. In addition there are numerous domestic ferries, connecting the many islands off the coast with each other and the mainland.
