Good to know:
The main line in Greece runs from Thessaloniki to Athens and includes many scenic parts. All other lines are connected to this main line. Overall, the railway network is not really dense, especially on the Peloponnes peninsula many lines are closed. From Athens, you can reach Patras, a major port for ferries to Italy. Kalambaka and the Meteora monasteries can be reached via a branch line of the Athens – Thessaloniki main line. From Thessaloniki, international trains run to Skopje and Sofia, other lines run to Alexandroupoli, from where you can continue to Istanbul by bus, and to Florina, from where you can continue to Lake Ohrid and to Albania.
Timetables for international services are available in our schedule planner or the Interrail app which include all trains and timings. However we recommend to check timings on the website of TRAINOSE or locally.
Intercity trains require a reservation which unfortunately is rather expensive. We recommend to instead travel with regular fast trains which can be used without reservation where possible. On the route from Athens to Thessaloniki this requires a change of trains during the day or to travel overnight on the direct night train. More information also available on the blog.
The ferries from Greece to Italy are included in the Interrail ticket. Additionally you get reductions for many domestic services to reach the Greek islands.
