Good to know:
The most important railway is the main line from north to south which connects the capital Skopje with Belgrade and Thessaloniki. Another international connection is available from Skopje to Pristina. The railway network is not very dense, apart from the main line there are just a handful of branch lines with a sparse service. However, most of the lines are very scenic, especially the line from Skopje to Thessaloniki through the Vardar valley.
Timetables for Macedonia are available in our schedule planner or the Interrail app which include all trains and timings. For timings of local trains we recommend to also check the website of MZ.
Lake Ohrid, one of the main tourist attractions of Macedonia, is not accessible by rail. To get there, you can use buses from Bitola or Kicevo or travel by bus all the way from Skopje. From Lake Ohrid you can then continue towards Greece or Albania by bus or taxi.
If you want to travel from Macedonia to Bulgaria you have to make a detour via Nis or Thessaloniki. Alternatively you can use a direct bus from Skopje to Sofia, these are not included in Interrail though.
