Interrail in Norway
How to travel by Interrail in Norway. Overview and information to travel routes, Norwegian train types, night trains and Interrail reservations.
Validity:
Interrail is valid on all trains of NSB (State Railways) as well as on the trains from Narvik and Oslo towards Sweden which are operated by SJ (Swedish Railways).
A discount is available on Flam Railway.
Interrail is not valid on Flytoget services.

Reservation and supplement:
Day trains: Compulsory reservation on Snabbtag services from Oslo to Stockholm. All other trains can be used without a seat reservation. However, it is strongly recommend to buy a seat reservation for travelling on long distance services (Regiontog) from Oslo to Trondheim, Bergen and Stavanger and from Trondheim to Bodo. If you board one of these trains without a reservation you can ask the conductor for a free seat (if available).

Night trains: As on the day trains, you can travel on night trains in Norway without a seat reservation, however we strongly recommend to get one.

Good to know:
The railway network of Norway is not very dense, there are just a few railway lines. From Oslo you can reach most important cities though. On these main lines a handful of trains run, including night trains. You often have to make a detour via Oslo (for instance from Bergen to Stavanger) so it can make sense to look for bus connections too. Trains run north of the Polar Circle to Bodo, from there onwards you have to use bus, ferry or plane to get to the far north. Narvik is also served by trains, but not connected to the rest of the Norwegian network. Trains from Narvik run to Lulea and Stockholm in Sweden.
Most trains are very scenic, for example Bergen Railway (Oslo – Bergen), Dovre Railway (Oslo – Trondheim), Rauma Railway (Dombas – Andalsnes) or Nordland Railway (Trondheim – Bod🧐 and of course Flam Railway (Myrdal – Flam).

If you are travelling without a seat reservation you can ask the conductors for free seats, they have a list of available seats.
There is no dedicated 1st class on trains in Norway, however NSB Komfort accommodation is available for a surcharge for 2nd class Interrail pass holders. 1st class pass holders travel for free in NSB Komfort – seat reservation is required.
A number of ferries starts from Norway to Denmark and Germany, for example from Bergen via Stavanger to Hirtshals and from Oslo to Copenhagen and Kiel. Additionally there are many domestic routes available along the coast, including the famous Hurtigruten service.
