Good to know:
The main line in Portugal is the north-south axis from Porto to Lisbon. Between the two major cities frequent IC and AP express trains operate. On other lines you will typically find just a handful of express trains each day. International services run from Porto to Vigo (twice daily) plus from Lisbon to Hendaye and Madrid (one night train per day). Many smaller villages, especially in the border regions to Spain and on the south-western coast are only accessible by bus.
Timetables of all services of CP are available in our schedule planner or the Interrail app which include all trains and timings. You can also check on the national schedule planner.
The night trains from Lisbon to Irun/Hendaye and Madrid are the most important international connections. Especially during the busy summer season we recommend to make your reservations early. Alternative connections to get to Portugal are the trains from Vigo to Porto or the bus connections between Huelva and Vila Real de Santo Antonio or Sevilla to Faro.
Reservations for domestic trains are only available locally at train stations in Portugal. These are usually available at short notice until departure of the train. Reservations for international trains are usually also available from abroad. As there is only one night train each day to Hendaye (for travel to Paris) and Madrid we recommend to make bookings quite early, especially during summer season.
