For railway fans :
The drawbridge Karnin (completed in 1933 , destroyed in 1945) is a remnant of the former 350m long railway bridge (Karnin Bridge), linking the Pomeranian mainland at Kamp with the island of Usedom in Karnin and stands today as a technical monument located in the so-called "Strom" connecting the Szczecin Bay with the river Peene .
In the west of the town of Usedom , on the edge of the so-called Usedom angle, is the small village of Karnin. Every year thousands of visitors come here. The highlight of the place is visible from afar. Powerful rises a massive steel skeleton of the Peene river. It is the rest of the 33m high railway bridge opened in 1933. Already in 1876 a 360 m long swing bridge was built from the mainland to the island on the river Peene. Therefore Swinoujscie was accessible by train from Berlin. The bridge was very significant (both economically and as well for tourists). But it was very soon no longer cope with the always increasing volume of traffic. The new (at that time longest railway bridge with 600m) was opened in 1933 after two years of construction. The lifting technique corresponded to the functional principle of an elevator so you could, raise or lower the tracks within three minutes. In 1935, 52 daily trains crossed the Karnin bridge (including twelve fast trains) . At the end of April 1945, the bridge was blown up.
