Brief History

The first railroad in Peru was opened in 1851 between Lima and Callao, a distance of 14 km. It was built on standard gauge (1435 mm). Subsequent railroad development was piecemeal due to the mountainous terrain, and many lines with different gauges were built.
Like most railroads in South America, Peru's railroads fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century, but some have been revived as important tourist routes. The southern network serves the famous Inca city of Machupicchu and also connects to Lake Titicaca for ferry service to neighboring Bolivia. The central network includes a line from Lima to La Oroya and Huancayo, and a former mining company line to Cerro de Pasco. The former 3 ft (914 mm) gauge line from Huancayo to Huancavalica was converted to standard gauge in 2008 and incorporated into the Central Network. The section between Lima and La Oroa has the world's highest standard gauge railroad peak, which was surpassed for many years by the new line in Tibet. However, the Peru Central Railroad remains one of the most impressive railroads in the world with its steep climbs and curves.
In 2019, the tender for the construction of a new 323-kilometer standard gauge railroad between Lima and Ica began.

The country's rail network consists mainly of conventional trains that serve a variety of purposes, including passenger and freight transportation. Although Peru has discussed and planned measures to improve and expand its railroad infrastructure, including the possibility of establishing high-speed railroads, to date there are no high-speed train systems in the country.

Infants between the ages of 0 and 2 do not need to pay for tickets, provided they sit with their parents in the same seat on the train. In the event that parents prefer their infant(s) to occupy their own seat, the additional seat is subject to the payment of the special child rate. For the Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train,  service, there is no different rate between children and adults. Infants (between 0 and 2 years old), will not pay a ticket if during the trip, they occupy the cabin of the adult.
