ItalyThe Basilica of St John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano) is the cathedral church of Rome and the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. (Not St peter's in the Vatican as most tourist believe, although the pope does reside at the Vatican.)
As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, containing the papal throne (Cathedra Romana), it ranks above all other churches in the Roman Catholic Church, even above St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Although the Pope rarely visits!
Said to be the first Christian basilica to be built in Rome, it was, until the late 14th century, the pope's principal residence. Originally built in the 4th century by Constantine, it has since been rebuilt many times. Only fragmented parts remain. The present building whose shape dates to 14th century, has been remodeled many times including replacing most of the structure with work by architect Domenico Fontana, and a further renovation of the interior by Francesco Borromini in the 17th century; and a facade by Alessandro Galilei, completed in 1735.
