United KingdomYork Railway Station
York Railway Station is a grand Victorian affair, a time when money was no object for the railway companies! The station is still incredibly busy, with all East Coast Mainline services between London / Newcastle and Scotland calling at the station. It is also the terminus of local trains from Hull and Leeds (via Harrogate, a very attractive town). Trains from Liverpool and Manchester to the traditional seaside resort of Scarborough also call at York as well as long-distance Cross Country services from Scotland to Birmingham and the South West. The station itself offers the usual food outlets owned by SSP that are found at most UK mainline stations. There's also a tourist information office available. In addition, the station now features a real ale bar - The York Tap - which although I haven't personally tried, I've heard it's far nicer that normal railway station bars - serving local ales, Belgian beers etc. Also if you're travelling by train to York, there is an entrance from the station to the National Railway Musuem. I haven't visited the museum for several years, but if you have any interest at all in the history of the worlds railways (bearing in mind, they were invented in England ;)), this place is well worth a visit. The station is located around two minutes walk outside the Roman city walls. On a summer's day, these are lovely to walk around. I believe they are some of the most intact of the remaining Roman walls in Europe. Within the walls, you will find the historic centre of York. I won't go into details, as a quick internet search will give you an abundance of information, but the amount of sightseeing and shopping that can be done on quaint old streets - such as 'The Shambles' is immense. The cathedral is also well worth a visit (or at least a snap shot!)
