To travel from Albania to Montenegro you have to use a bus. There are no passenger train connections between these two countries.

Travel by one of the frequent bus (minibus) connections from Shkoder to Ulcinj or Podgorica. There are as well long-distance bus connections from Tirana via Shkoder and Podgorica to Kotor.

Direct train connections via day and overnight connect Serbia and Montenegro via one of the most scenic rail routes of Europe.

This rail route leads from Bar and Podgorica via the mountains of Montenegro to Belgrade (Serbia).

2a Travelling from Tirana (Albania) to Skopje (Macedonia)

Travel from Albania to North Macedonia by bus. There is no train connection available.

Direct buses run from Tirana to Skopje and other travel destinations. The journey time from Tirana to Skopje is 7:30 hours. The ticket price is 20 EUR.

2b Travelling from Skopje (Macedonia) to Thessaloniki (Greece)

Travel from North Macedonia to Greece by train. The only available train connection is by the night train from Belgrade via Skopje (North Macedonia) to Thessaloniki (Greece).

2021: This train runs only in the summer months. Between the Macedonian-Greek border and Thessaloniki the train is replaced by buses.

The journey time from Skopje to Thessaloniki is 5:45 hours. The departure time in Skopje is 04:45. The arrival time in Thessaloniki is 10:30. The train ticket fare is 13 EUR.

An alternative travel route is by train to Bitola (North Macedonia). There you cross the border by taxi to Florina (Greece), from where you continue by train to Thessaloniki.

1) Skopje to Bitola: the journey time is 3:20 hours. Three daily train connections with departure times in Skopje at 07:00 / 14:30 / 20:00. And arrival times in Bitola at 10:20 / 18:00 / 23:30. The ticket fare is 6 EUR.

2) Bitola to Florina: by taxi. The journey time is one hour plus border control. The distance is 35 kilometres. The taxi fare is 28 EUR.

3) Florina to Thessaloniki: the journey time is 2:40 hours. One train connection daily with departure time in Florina at 16:00. And the arrival time in Thessaloniki is 18:50. The ticket fare is 10 EUR.

Where to buy a ticket from Skopje to Thessaloniki?

Buy the train ticket at a railway station. Note: in some countries you have to pay a service fee at the ticket counter. The ticket can be purchased at a station in the country of departure, also sometimes in other countries.

2d Travelling from Patras (Greece) to Bari (Italy)

Travel from Patras to Bari by ferry. The journey time is 16 hours. The ticket price starts at 50 EUR. The ferry company Superfast Ferries / ANEK Lines serves this route.

You will find these service categories on board of the ferry:

- standard inclinable seats which are the cheapest travel option
- shared cabins with beds: you share the cabin and the shower and toilet with other travellers.
- private cabins: from standard to luxury cabins with private bed, shower and toilet. This is the best option if you want privacy, travel with your family or friends.

The check-in time is two hours prior to departure.

How you get in Patras from the the train station to the ferry port:
You have to get from the railway station to the „New Port“ of Patras, which is 2 kilometers in the south of the railway station. Either walk within 30 minutes along the promenade or use the bus line number 18. It is a journey time of 10 minutes with hourly departures. The bus ticket price is 1,20 EUR.
In Patras you have a second port: the North Port which serves ferry routes to the Ionian Sea. Take bus line 18 or walk from there to the railway station within 10 minutes. The railway station is in the middle of both ports.

How you get in Bari from the ferry terminal to the train station:
It is a distance of 2 kilometers from the ferry terminal to „Bari Centrale“ railway station. You can either walk which will take about 25 minutes. Or you travel by bus line number 50. It is a circle line from „Stazione Marittima“ to „Bari Centrale“ (arrival directly in front of the train station). The bus runs every 20 minutes and the ticket price is 1 EUR. The bus journey time is 15 minutes.
The ferry port of Bari has two terminals.
1. „Terminal Crociere“ is for ferry arrivals from Greece.
2. „Terminal Porto di Bari“ is for ferry arrivals other than Greece, for example from Croatia.
Between these two ferry terminals runs a free shuttle bus.
If you want to visit Bari old-town, use the lockers at the train station. These are better than the ones at the ferry terminal due to the opening times.

3a Travelling from Tirana (Albania) to Durrës (Albania)

To travel in Albania by train, you have to buy your ticket locally at the train station. Tickets are not sold in advance, only for the next departure.

There is only one service class available.

Timetable amendments and train cancellations come into effect at short notice. Please always check locally at the station before travelling.

3b Travelling from Durrës (Albania) to Bari (Italy)

Travel from Durrës to Bari by ferry. The journey time is 9 hours. The ticket price starts at 40 EUR. The ferry companies Adria Ferries, GNV and Ventouris Ferries serve this route.
